The Work

Author(s): Bri Lee

Fiction

The intersections between art, life, power and privilege are explored in this first work of fiction from the bestselling author of Eggshell Skull. Lally has invested everything into her gallery in Manhattan and the sacrifices are finally paying off. Pat is a scholarship boy desperate to establish himself in Sydney's antiquities scene. When they meet at New York's Armory Show their chemistry is instant - fighting about art and politics is just foreplay. With an ocean between them they try to get back to work, but they're each struggling to balance money and ambition with the love of art that first drew them to their strange industry. Lally is a kingmaker, bringing exciting new talent to the world, so what's the problem if it's also making her rich? Pat can barely make his rent and he isn't sure if he's taking advantage of his clients or if they are taking advantage of him, and which would be worse? Their international affair ebbs and flows like the market while their aspirations and insecurities are driving them both towards career-ending mistakes. If love costs and art takes, what price do we pay for wanting it all? The Work is about the biggest intersections of life: of art and commerce, of intimacy and distance, of talent and entitlement, and of labour and privilege. Dazzling, funny, and unforgettable, it is an epic and forensic exploration of modern love and passion, politics and power. The Work announces a brilliant new voice in Australian fiction.

Product Information

If THE WORK by Bri Lee could be summed up into three words, it would be: ‘Sex, drugs, and art-dealing.’ From the get go, this debut contemporary fiction novel by bestselling nonfiction author Bri Lee is a smart, sassy satire of two art worlds colliding - the old and the new - with equal parts sugar and spice. As an oceans-crossing romance, it dives into the burgeoning relationship of Lally and Patrick, who meet in a lavish art fair in New York, and begin a long distance fling to find out if their physical chemistry might translate to duelling time zones, opposing schedules and Skype calls. Lally is an up and coming curator with her own art gallery, and Pat is a young associate for a stuffy art auction house in Sydney. Both arrive to the relationship with their own unique baggage, misgivings, and flaws, and it’s hard to tell if they will last the distance. But, as a reader, I had a lot of fun finding out. I’d recommend this for anyone who enjoys a fun, hedonistic romp that flirts with class, gender, and privilege, but also unpacks it with equal fervour. Bri Lee doesn’t hold back on the steam vent, and a language warning is recommended. If you’re a fan of Bri’s previous nonfiction writing, THE WORK stands confidently alone, entirely different - which perhaps makes a statement about the work itself, and separating the art from the artist. Overall this was a fast-paced read with fever-pitch heat and high-brow hilarity guaranteed.
