Description

Cover story- Podium Panache- Conductor Jessica Gethin was one of Limelight's Top Twenty Australian Artists in 2017. Since then her career has continued to grow, with an increasing roster of international engagements pre-COVID. This month, the dynamic maestra conducts a program of Latin music for West Australian Symphony Orchestra and Giselle for West Australian Ballet. We talk to her about life and music.

Feature- In June, it's 200 years since Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freisch tz (The Marksman or The Freeshooter) premiered in Berlin. The Romantic piece, which marked the birth of German opera, was immensely popular in the 19th century but no longer features in the standard repertoire. Albert Ehrnrooth traces its history.

Feature- Arts funding has taken a battering in recent times, with artists largely overlooked by the Federal Government during the coronavirus crisis. We explore the history of arts funding in Australia, canvas why the arts barely register with politicians, and discuss what needs to change if the Australian arts are not only to survive but flourish.

Reviews- Our experienced critics cover the latest live concerts, operas, plays and dance productions including Melbourne Symphony Orchestra's performance of Margaret Sutherland's neglected Violin Concerto, Bach's Easter Oratorio and Durufle's Requiem at West Australian Symphony Orchestra, and the world premiere of The Boy Who Talked to Dogs at State Theatre Company South Australia.

On Stage, On Air and Online- We preview live performances, live streams, cinema screenings, digital events and radio highlights to look out for this month.
